Data collection infoField methods for sample collection followed those outlined in the BC Field Sampling Manual for Continuous Monitoring and the Collection of Air, Air-Emission, Water, Wastewater, Soil, Sediment, and Biological Samples (BC MOE 2013). Samples were collected into clean, pre-labelled containers provided by ALS Environmental Laboratories. In-situ measurements of dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature, conductivity (including specific conductance), pH, and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) were taken in the field using a YSI Pro Plus. Field blanks and duplicate samples were used to ensure accuracy and precision of the data. The results of the field blanks were checked for exceedances of the method detection limits (MDL). Blanks that exceed 2 times the MDL are commonly flagged for QA/QC concerns, as recommended by the BC Ministry of Environment (BC MOE 2013).
Data processingOnce collected, samples were stored in the field in a cooler with ice packs and additional ice and ice packs were added to the coolers before samples were shipped to ALS laboratories in Calgary. ALS is an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited full-service laboratory. Parameters analyzed were in accordance with those listed in the Water and Air Baseline Monitoring Guidance Document for Mine Proponents and Operators (BC MOE 2016). Samples collected for the laboratory analyses were analyzed for metals (total and dissolved), general/routine chemistry, anions and nutrients, organic carbon (total and dissolved), chemical and biochemical oxygen demand (COD and BOD), volatile organic carbons, and hydrocarbons. The results of the field blanks were checked for exceedances of the method detection limits (MDL). Blanks that exceed 2 times the MDL are commonly flagged for QA/QC concerns, as recommended by the BC Ministry of Environment (BC MOE 2013). Results from duplicate samples were compared by calculating the relative percent difference (RPD) for each parameter between the sample and it’s duplicate.
